Meh...

The lack of characterization killed this for me. I didn’t see the relationship to Jane Eyre that the main character kept referencing.

This had a lot of potential and the prose is quite nice, but the characters didn’t make up for the slow plot.

Shame because the cover is beautiful and as an extremely nostalgic person I am enamored with the idea of spending three winter days, during the depth of your depression, with a friend whom you had sexual experiences with but is an idealized version of who you knew and has somewhat moved on but is trying to reach you in your darkness.

To sum up my thoughts, I really just wanted this to be about the relationship Marin and Mabel shared. I couldn’t find myself caring about the other elements, which is unfortunate because the author has referenced that the death of her own grandfather inspired this novel. I was surprised to find out that the author is a woman married to another woman because the gay references are so subtle you’d miss them if you weren’t looking.
